However, buying an EV requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure you make the right choice.

So, let’s dive into the top seven considerations you should keep in mind when buying an electric vehicle, empowering you to make an educated decision and embark on an electrifying future.

Top 7 considerations

  1. Range and Charging Infrastructure:
    • One of the primary concerns for potential EV owners is the vehicle’s range and access to charging infrastructure. Consider your daily driving habits and determine the range you require. Most modern EVs offer ranges suitable for daily commutes, but if you frequently travel long distances, you may want to opt for a model with a higher range. Additionally, evaluate the availability and convenience of charging stations in your area and along your regular routes to ensure hassle-free charging.
  2. Battery Life and Warranty:
    • The battery is the heart of an electric vehicle, and understanding its life expectancy and warranty is crucial. Research the expected lifespan of the battery and whether the manufacturer offers a warranty that covers potential degradation over time. It’s also worth exploring whether the warranty includes replacement or repair costs, as battery replacements can be expensive.
  3. Charging Speed and Options:
    • Consider the charging speeds and options available for the EV you’re interested in. Different charging options, such as Level 1 (standard household outlet), Level 2 (240V charging stations), and DC fast charging (high-powered public stations), provide varying charging speeds. If you frequently need quick charging, make sure the EV supports faster charging options and assess the availability of compatible charging infrastructure in your area.
  4. Total Cost of Ownership:
    • When purchasing an EV, it’s essential to evaluate the total cost of ownership. While EVs tend to have higher upfront costs than their gasoline counterparts, they often have lower operating and maintenance costs. Factor in potential savings on fuel and maintenance, as EVs have fewer moving parts and require less frequent servicing. Additionally, research any available tax credits, incentives, or rebates that can further offset the initial purchase price.
  5. Vehicle Performance:
    • Don’t compromise on performance when selecting an EV. Contrary to popular belief, electric vehicles can deliver impressive acceleration and driving dynamics. Look for an EV that aligns with your performance expectations, whether you prioritize sportiness, efficiency, or a balance between the two. Read reviews and consider test-driving different models to gauge their performance characteristics.
  6. Safety Features:
    • Just like any other vehicle, safety should be a top priority when buying an EV. Research the safety features and ratings of the models you’re considering. Look for features such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), collision avoidance technology, lane-keeping assist, and robust structural design. Safety ratings from organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) can provide valuable insights.
  7. Resale Value and Future Technology:
    • Consider the resale value of the EV you’re planning to purchase. EV technology is rapidly evolving, and new models with enhanced features are regularly introduced. Understanding the potential resale value can help you plan for future upgrades or replacements. Additionally, research the manufacturer’s commitment to ongoing software updates and advancements, as these can significantly impact the long-term usability and value of the vehicle.

Our Experience

After careful consideration, we decided to purchase a Tesla Model Y and we love it. There has been a bit of a learning curve to understand the basics of day-to-day ownership of an EV (i.e. charging, range, trip planning, etc) but overall, it has been an absolute pleasure to own.

We love road trips, and hitting the open road looking for new adventures has always offered us the freedom and excitement to recharge our own personal batteries. With an EV, the experience of a road trip has changed compared to driving a gasoline-powered vehicle, but not necessarily in a negative way. Charging on the road and range expectations is something that takes some getting used to. One of the main benefits of Tesla ownership is access to the massive charging network of superchargers.

The trip planner in the Tesla navigation system will plan your route, and provide you the best stops for charging. It even recommends the amount of time you will need to charge for. It makes it pretty easy for the novice and experienced alike. Most of the supercharger stops have amenities close by, so the stops are rarely boring, and even if they are, the built-in entertainment system in the Tesla offers you a wealth of content to choose from while you wait.

When we’ve charged at the non-Tesla charging stations on our trips, chatting with fellow EV owners has given us an appreciation of the other manufacturers and some of them have really nice products.

At the end of the day, when you are looking to buy an electric vehicle involves a thoughtful evaluation of several key factors. By considering the range, charging infrastructure, battery life, charging options, total cost of ownership, vehicle performance, safety features, and resale value, you can make an informed decision. EVs offer numerous benefits, including environmental sustainability and reduced operating costs. By keeping these considerations in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to choose an electric vehicle that aligns with your lifestyle, budget, and values while contributing to a greener future.
