So, grab your sun hat, and let’s set sail on a journey of preparation!
Research and Choose the Right Cruise
- Research various cruise lines, itineraries, and destinations.
- Consider the ship size, onboard amenities, and reputation of the cruise line.
- Read reviews, consult travel agents, and compare prices to find the perfect cruise that fits your preferences and budget.
Start your preparations by researching various cruise lines, itineraries, and destinations. Consider the size and style of the ship, onboard amenities, and the cruise line’s reputation for service. Look for cruise lines that cater to your interests and preferences. For example, if you’re a food enthusiast, consider a cruise line known for its exceptional culinary offerings, like Celebrity, Oceania, and Holland America. Read reviews, consult travel agents, and compare prices to find the perfect cruise that suits your preferences and budget. Choosing the right cruise depending on what time of year will help to enhance your experience and help prevent surprises. For example, some cruise lines cater better to families with children, but some cater more to mature clientele. This is also true depending on the time of year you decide to travel. Deciding to cruise during typical school break weeks usually means more expensive fares and a busier cruise.
Preparing for a Cruise: Plan Your Itinerary and Excursions
- Research local attractions and excursion options at each destination.
- Consider historical sites, natural wonders, adventure activities, and cultural experiences.
- Check the duration and timing of port stops to plan your activities accordingly.
- Book excursions in advance to secure a spot.
- Get a phone plan if you intend n using your cellphone in each country.
Once you’ve selected your cruise, take the time to plan your itinerary and explore the ports of call. Research local attractions, landmarks, and excursion options at each destination. Consider factors such as historical sites, natural wonders, adventure activities, and cultural experiences. Check the duration and timing of your port stops to determine if you’ll have enough time to explore independently or if booking organized excursions is necessary. Consider booking your excursions in advance to secure a spot and avoid disappointment. There may be savings if you take local excursions after you disembark the ship, but ensure to know what time you must be back on board. Excursions not tied to the ship may not be able to get you back in time for boarding.
Savings Opportunity:
If your phone has roaming enabled, you will automatically connect to the local cellphone towers in that country and could amass extremely expensive charges. Preparing for a cruise includes understanding your cellphone plan to prevent these nasty surprises.
Get a local sim card, or better yet, install an E-sim onto your phone if it is supported. The easiest and most economical way to get an e-sim for individual countries (or for worldwide coverage) is through Airalo. For a small price, you can prevent potentially thousands of dollars of roaming charges. You can download the e-sim before your trip and even download the Airalo app prior to traveling and then it will just work when you arrive, saving you time and headaches during your trip. I honestly can’t recommend this enough.
Prepare Travel Documents
- Check passport expiration dates and visa requirements.
- Consult your healthcare provider for necessary vaccinations.
- Make photocopies of important documents and consider travel insurance for added peace of mind.

Like all trips, ensure that your travel documents are in order well in advance of your departure date. This is especially important because with cruising, you will most likely visit more than one country and the last thing you need is to have issues with your travel documentation or identification. Check the expiration dates of your passport and any necessary visas for the countries you will be visiting. Some countries also require specific vaccinations, so consult with your healthcare provider or visit a travel clinic to ensure you are up-to-date. Make photocopies of your passport, visa, and other important documents, and store them separately from the originals. It’s also a good idea to purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage for added peace of mind.
Pet Owners:
Did you know that some cruise lines allow pets onboard? Check with them for more details, as this can vary between cruise dates and ports of call for the same cruise lines. Remember that if you are traveling with your furry sidekick, you will need to bring along proof of vaccinations and possibly other documentation to ensure smooth sailing. Check with the cruise line for specifics. When preparing for a cruise with your furry friend, be sure to make a list of things that you will need. Most importantly, include enough food and treats for the duration of the cruise plus additional travel days. In addition, if your dog requires medications, ensure you stock up enough for the duration of the trip.
Preparing for a Cruise means Packing Strategically
- Make a checklist of essentials such as clothing, toiletries, medications, and electronics.
- Pack comfortable shoes, appropriate attire, and items suitable for the climate.
- Utilize onboard laundry facilities to pack lighter.
- Don’t forget travel adapters, chargers, and necessary medications.

Traveling light is the key to success with cruising. Packing efficiently and thoughtfully will make your cruise experience more enjoyable overall. Start by making a checklist of essentials such as clothing, toiletries, medications, and electronics. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions, flip-flops for the pool deck, hats for sunny excursions, and appropriate attire for formal nights if applicable. Consider the climate of your destinations and pack accordingly, including sunscreen and sunglasses for sunny destinations, or sweaters and jackets for cooler climates. Most cruise ships provide laundry facilities or offer laundry services, so you can pack lighter and wash clothes as needed. Don’t forget to pack your travel adapters, chargers, and any necessary medications.
Finding your Sea-legs:
Nothing ruins a cruise more than getting seasick. Even the most avid sailor may encounter a moment of seasickness. Make sure to bring along motion sickness medication, even if you don’t think you’ll need it, more so if you’ve had episodes in the past. There are different types of medications, containing different active ingredients that are available. Some may cause drowsiness and some need to be taken well before the sea sickness begins. Familiarize yourself with the medication to make sure it’s right for you.
Familiarize Yourself with Onboard Policies:
- Review dress codes, activity options, and dining arrangements.
- Understand any restrictions on items like alcohol or non-prescription drugs.
- Be aware of policies for formal nights or specific onboard activities.

To ensure a smooth experience once onboard, take the time to review the cruise line’s policies and guidelines. Familiarize yourself with dress codes for different venues, including formal nights if applicable. Understand the onboard activities, entertainment options, and dining arrangements. Some cruise lines offer specialty dining options, while others have flexible dining times. Familiarize yourself with any restrictions on items such as alcohol or non-prescription drugs. Knowing these policies in advance will help you make the most of your onboard experience.
Don’t get caught:
Most cruise lines don’t allow you to consume alcohol brought on board and in fact, it could be confiscated if trying to board with your favorite bottle of wine or spirit. There are some cruise lines that will allow it but will hold it for you and serve it to you at dinner time. Be aware that they may charge for this, so that bottle of wine may end up costing more than expected. Be sure to ask the cruise line in advance to make sure you understand their policies and to prevent any embarrassing or upsetting surprises.
Know the Charges
- Understand additional expenses like gratuities, onboard purchases, and optional excursions.
- Check if the cruise line offers beverage packages or prepaid gratuities to help with budgeting.

As you prepare for a cruise, it’s essential to understand the charges associated with your cruise. Besides the initial cost of the cruise fare, there may be additional expenses such as port fees, gratuities, onboard purchases, specialty dining, spa services, and optional excursions. Review the cruise line’s website or contact them directly to get an idea of the average cost of these additional services. Some cruise lines offer beverage packages or prepaid gratuities, which can help you budget and avoid surprise expenses. Be aware of any cancellation fees or penalties if you need to modify or cancel your reservation.
Money-Savings Opportunity:
Some cruise lines have promotions that include alcoholic drinks, WiFi, gratuities, and even cabin credits when booking certain cruises. Don’t be afraid to shop around to see if there are promotions that are offering these bonuses. This can be especially rewarding if you are flexible with your dates.
Know the Rules around Cruises
- Familiarize yourself with rules on smoking, noise, behavior, and safety procedures.
- Understand alcohol consumption and childcare services if traveling with children.
Cruise ships have rules and regulations to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers. Familiarize yourself with these rules to avoid any misunderstandings or disruptions during your cruise. Pay attention to rules regarding smoking areas, noise restrictions, appropriate behavior in public areas, and safety procedures. It’s also important to know the rules and age restrictions around alcohol consumption and the availability of childcare services or kids’ clubs if you’re traveling with children. By respecting these rules, you’ll contribute to an enjoyable onboard atmosphere for everyone.
Know the Dining Times and Choices
I’ve left the best part of cruising to the last point – The food. Dining is one of the standout things about cruising. Cruise ships are equipped with a vast selection of restaurants, food areas, and choices, making sure there is usually something for everyone. Dining truly is an integral part of the cruise experience, and understanding the dining options and timings will enhance your enjoyment onboard. Here are some recommendations and considerations.

Traditional Dining vs. Flexible Dining:
Many cruise lines offer both traditional dining and flexible dining options. Traditional dining follows set meal times and assigned tables, allowing you to establish a routine and dine with the same group of passengers throughout your cruise. Flexible dining offers more flexibility in terms of dining times and table assignments, allowing you to dine whenever and with whomever you prefer. Consider your dining preferences and select the option that suits your lifestyle.
Specialty Restaurants:
Cruise ships often have specialty restaurants that offer a more intimate and upscale dining experience. These venues typically require reservations and may have an additional fee. If you’re a food enthusiast or celebrating a special occasion, consider trying one of these specialty restaurants for a memorable dining experience.
Buffet and Casual Dining:
In addition to formal dining venues, cruise ships typically have buffet and casual dining options available throughout the day. These venues provide a wide variety of cuisines and allow you to dine at your own pace. They are perfect for quick meals, snacks, or casual dining experiences.
Dietary Restrictions and Preferences:
If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, inform the cruise line in advance. Most cruise lines are accommodating and offer a range of options for vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free diets, and other dietary needs. It’s recommended to communicate your requirements during the booking process or directly with the cruise line’s guest services.
Theme Nights and Culinary Events:
Keep an eye out for theme nights and culinary events on your cruise. These special dining experiences often feature regional cuisines, chef demonstrations, wine tastings, and interactive cooking classes. Participating in these events can add a unique and enjoyable culinary dimension to your cruise. As you are preparing for a cruise, pack the necessary clothes to participate in theme nights to make it a much more fun experience.
Explore Local Cuisine at Port Stops:
While exploring ports of call, take the opportunity to sample the local cuisine. Research local restaurants or street food options in each destination and indulge in the flavors of the region. This culinary exploration can enrich your overall cruise experience and provide a taste of the local culture.
Remember to review the dining options and make any necessary reservations before your cruise to secure your preferred dining times and venues. Flexibility and openness to trying new flavors and dining experiences will make your cruise dining a real treat.

One of the dreams I’ve had is to take an Around the World cruise! At the present time, it’s not economically feasible, but I truly hope we can manage that one day. Preparing for a cruise of this length would require much more forethought, considering the different climates and the need for some diversity in clothing. Until then, I’ll be happy with our next 7-day cruise. Regardless of how long it is, however, preparing for a cruise is an exciting part of the overall experience, setting the tone and building the anticipation for a fantastic and memorable voyage. Whether you are traveling as a couple, a family, a group, or even alone, good preparation will ensure the best possible trip.
